Police Seize UK Indymedia Server (Again)

On 22 January 2009 an Indymedia server was seized by the Police in Manchester. This was probably related to postings about the recent SHAC trial.

Kent Police had e-mailed imc-uk-contact in the morning requesting that personal information about the judge in the Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty (SHAC) trial be removed from the site. However this information had already been quickly removed in line with IMC UK policy. The e-mail also requested information relating to the poster be retained. Indymedia as an open posting news service does not log such information about its sources.

The warrant, as yet not seen by Indymedia, was we believe, specifically for this one server colocated in Manchester which is a mirror of the site. So it can only be concluded that the judge didn?t check the legality and validity of the request to remove it, and that the police wanted to attack the infrastructure within the UK.

Other sites that have been affected as a result of this seizure include London Indymedia, the global Indymedia documentation project server, la Soja Mata ? an anti-GM soya campaign focusing on South American development, Transition Sheffield and a Canadian campaign against the 2010 olympics.

Bicyclist dies after being hit by bus in Av. Paulista

Márcia Regina de Andrade Prado, 40, have died this Wednesday, january 14th, after being hit by a bus while bicycling at Av. Paulista. Member of the bicicletada paulistana (paulistan critical mass), she was one of the signatories of the Manifesto dos Invisíveis (Manifest of the Invisibles), in which bicyclists says that what is missing are not bicycle lanes, but the understanding that bicyclists are also part of the traffic and should have their lives respected.

"Streets are public spaces and should be shared by all vehicles (...) Instead of bicycle lanes, the installment of bicycle stands should come accompanied by a traffic education campaign and a work of street signalization, to inform drivers that bicyclists can and should ride on the streets of our city. In the driver?s license courses there isn?t a single paragraph about protecting the bicyclist, about the zeal of the higher vehicles for the smaller ones. Eventually, one quotes the legislation to be temporarily recorded, without ever explaining it adequately. And the signalization, when exists, forbids the bicycle; it never tells drivers about the sharing of the street, never regulates its uses or indicates alternative ways to the bicyclist. The absence of signalization uneducates drivers because doesn?t legitimate the presence of the bicycle on public streets".

Márcia was an experienced bicyclist and was pedaling on the right lane, destined to slower vehicules, near the Fundação Cásper Líbero (Cásper Líbero Foundation). The bus?s driver, Mário José de Oliveira, 53, told the press that he ?had no blame for the accident? and that he was with his ?conscience clear?. A witness said that the bus started to overtake the bicyclist and the driver threw the vehicule at her before finishing the overtake. The blogger Vendedor de Bananas (Bananas Salesman) outlines the situation this way: ?The fact is that there are many drivers who thinks it is funny to almost touch the bicyclists with their cars, intimidating us on a criminal way to show their irrational and arrogant discontent?. According to the traffic code, drivers should keep themselves 1,5 meters away from the bicyclist, at all sides. If this law had been respected, Márcia would still be with us. Em 2006, year of the last surving published by CET, 85 bicyclists have died in Sao Paulo?s traffic.

We from the Independent Media Center deeply mourn Márcia?s death and manifest our solidarity to all bicyclists. For a city where the streets belong to everybody ? bicyclist, pedestrian, scavengers, wheelchair users, skatists, strollers, etc. ? and not just to the motorized vehicules!

Public acts on January 15th and 16th
Last Thursday, 15th, around 18h, took place a homage to Márcia at Praça do Ciclista (Bicyclist Square), symbolically located at the same avenue where she was murdered. The act had the presence of her family, friends and participants of the critical mass. On Friday, 16th, the bicyclists have done an extra bicycling, leaving from the same Bicyclist Square, with a concentration around 18h and departure at 20h. The Bicyclist Square stays close to the corner of Paulista Avenue and Rua da Consolação (Consolation Street). The critical mass is a manifestation of bicyclists that support the use of bicycles in towns, against the automobile?s society.

NITERÓI - RIO DE JANEIRO Jan 22
S.O.S. Imbuhy Village in Niterói - RJ

Situated on the proximities of the military fortress of same name, the Imbuhy community lives in state of war with the army since 1995, due to an action of reintegration of possession impetrated on Justice by the militaries, that wish to expel from the place 32 families that live there from more than a century. Now, the village?s residents have less than 50 days to leave the place.

According to the community, the army disguises its reasons arguing that their presence inside the military fortress?s area constitutes a ?threat to nacional security?. However, the army itself organizes barbecues and general parties in the location.

As if the action of reintegration of possession wasn?t enough, the coexistence itself of the villagers with the army exposes them to a lot of randomness and duress for a long time. Nowadays, the fishing that was for decades the activity responsible for the sustain of most of the habitants it is almost never done. That?s because the militaries have restrained the fishing time, and have forbid the entry of fishing trucks on the fortress. Besides, they suffer misuse of authority from the militaries and omission of help.

Take part in the ajuri of the caracol in Outeiro

The Zapatista inspired network "Flor da Palavra" ("blossom of words", in a free translation) invites everyone to participate in a "ajuri" (gathering) to build the first "caracol" (snail) of Brasil, in the island of Caratateua (Outeiro), in Belém, Brasil, starting in January 2009. These "snails" are the bases for the organization of autogestion in the Zapatista's regions in Chiapas (Mexico), creating unity between its autonomous municipalities and communities and facilitating the communication of the native folks with national and international civil society solidarity. The ajuri is a traditional practice of the indigenous people and of the caboclos (brazilian descendants of white and indians), in which groups and individuals unite in solidarity to, for example, clean and prepare the land for cultivation. In Outeiro, the purpose of the "ajuri" is to buy a piece of land and then begin the physical and human construction of a permanent area which can be used by volunteers and inhabitants to cultivate local autonomy and communication with other struggles.

One way of expressing your solidarity is donating for the acquisition of the land, through paypal:

If you make any deposit, please communicate the "Flor da Palavra" network through the collective list palavra@lists.riseup.net, which is also open for new subscribers for the weaving of this and other actions. In January the volunteers can go to Belém in order to help buying and building the "caracol", to debate with locals, and to start actions seeking to strenghten their autonomy. There is no previous preparation or planning to receive volunteers, so it's better to take tents, food and other contributions to the future infra-structure of the place, like old computers, seeds and gardening tools, books for the library, bioconstruction materials, workshops, free radio, cameras and other initiatives to lead off the autonomous practices. The organization is collaborative and horizontal, so everyone is equally responsible for what happens. The culmination of the activities shall occur during the World Social Forum Belém (28th Jan 2009 to 1st Feb 2009).

There are already initiatives for the caracol to be also a place for the gathering of autonomous groups, free radios, Indymedia groups and other collectives. The network reminds that the revolution, for the EZLN, is the result of "the struggle in many social fronts, with many methods, under different social forms, with diverse degrees of compromise and participation", and stands out the importance that the main gathering happens with the people that live and frequent the island. Caratateua (Outeiro) is administrated by Belém, and is connected to the center by an 18km bridge, inaugurated in 1986. It has a population of 16.665 (data from the Belém City Hall, 1997) distributed in the quarters of Brasilia, Itaiteua, Tucumaeira, Fama, Fidélis, Água Boa, Primavera and Água Cristalina, which combine aspects of riverain rural life (as fishing and production of açaí -- a fruit from the amazonic region) with urbanization connected to the expansion of popular turism. It suffers with infra-structure and basic sanitation problems, as well as others linked with its "poor" region profile (in the "rich" point of view) and low priority for the State.

G8 IS THE PROBLEM, NOT THE SOLUTION Jul 15
Solidarity to the detainees

The global action day in solidarity to the resistence anti-G8 took place on the last July 12th, in Japan.

On July 5th, in Sapporo, 3 manifestants were detained and accused of ?violating the traffic laws and special orders to manifestations in Sapporo? and also of ?obstructing the police?s work?. One of the detainees is an Indymedia activist.

International activists who have participated in the protests told that ?the Japanese criminal judiciary system allows to keep detainees for 23 days without charges. Besides, the legal system in Japan imposes colective punishment, and that means that the organizers can be punished for the actions of others activists?.

The call transmitted by Indymedia Japan says that the homeless people of Sapporo and activists from Osaka were detained: ?We?ve reported the police?s repression against the manifestation and the homeless activists, and the request of immediate freedom for all of them?. On July 12th, simultaneously protest actions happened at 3pm in Sapporo, Tokyo, Osaka, etc., against the ?police?s capitalism?.

The Real Operation to "Rescue" Ingrid Betancourt and US Mercenaries

In order to understand the "rescue operation" of Ingrid Betancourt and the Northrop Grumman Corporation mercenaries who were released with her, it is necessary to piece together articles published in the media, filter the content and out of this is formed a true understanding of the facts of what happened here.

1. On June 3rd, Colombian Senator Piedad Cordoba revealed that she possessed information that the government of Colombia was negotiating a deal with FARC to trade money for the release of Betancourt and the mercenaries. The official policy of the United States is that they don't "negotiate with terrorists," even as many leaders of Latin American countries accuse President Uribe of supporting the AUC paramilitary death squads and accuse the United States of providing safe harbor to known terrorists such as Orlando Bosch and Luis Posada Carriles.

2. Careful observers began to question the strange circumstances under which the "dramatic rescue" of Ingrid Betancourt happened. Some guys with Che Guevara t-shirts simply showed up and redirected them into another helicopter? If it were that easy, why didn't they do that years ago? The French media also found strange the fact that Betancourt didn't resemble the gaunt and hungry images we have been seeing in the media -- she seemed well-fed and healthy, as if she were being prepared for release.

PROTEST Apr 11
Public school protests against Folha de São Paulo newspaper

Teachers, parents and students of the State School Professor Fidelino Figueiredo, are upset by the abusive article published this Thursday (April 10th) in the famous newspaper Folha de Sao Paulo. A public act against the newspaper's irresponsibility took place this Thursday, April 10th. The act also offered its support to the free and public school system.

In the article, the newspaper's journalist Paulo Sampaio accuses the students of robbery and incites the rivalty among "poor againt rich" schools. Against such accusations, about 40 protesters demanded the publication of a response letter .

During the act, an irresponsible driver ran over a protester that was trying to organize the traffic for the safety of the parents, teachers and, most of all, students. Luckily, the accident resulted only on a bruise and the victim was taken care at the Santa Casa Orthopedic Hospital.

Occupation of Porto Velho's INCRA

This Tuesday April 08th, the headquarters of INCRA in Porto velho was occupied by nearly 130 families of the nearby pre-assentamento (land ready to be, but not yet, shared among several families) Flor do Amazonas, asking for more speed at the bureaucratic process of the land regularization. The issue has already been ruled by the Federal Justice and the land was officially handed over to INCRA for further action.

For six years, especially during 2007, these families have been under pressure, with often use of violence, by the local police and landlords. These were backed by reclaiming property mandates issued by the State Justice, even thou the land is Federal property. Several huts of the locals have been set on fire, sometimes with all their belonging inside. Some peasants have been verbally assaulted and threatened aswell. Still, the INCRA has not issued a word about the issue.

The movement asks that the INCRA to grant the security of the pre-assentamento Flor do "Amazonas. It stands close to the city of Candeias do Jamari, at the northern region of the state of Rondonia. Nearly 250 families, all already inscribed and recognized as clients of the land reform, live at the pre-assentamento.

STUDENT'S MOVEMENT Apr 04
Students occupy UnB's rectory

In the afternoon of April 3rd, 2008, almost 200 students, teachers and employees occuppied the UNB's rectory (Brasilia's University). The mobilization has the major lines: the immediate resignation of the rector ( Thimothy Mulholland) and his vice (Edgar Mamiya) of their occupations: Rectory's Director Council, Fundação Universidade de Brasília (FUB), Fundação de Empreendimentos Científicos e Tecnológicos (FINATEC), FUNSAUDE, and all the foundations envolved in corruption process, expanding the discussions about the function of foundations in public universities. The movement demands direct parity elections or universal vote.

The activities of the day began with a student assembly followed by an act passing through all the university area, enlarging the mobilization. After the occupation, the rectory ordered the building's light and water cut-out, an attitude that reminds war strategies. Besides, the security blocked the entrance of new people, prohibited independent media journalists of going upstairs where the occupation was located, allowing just the presence of corporate media. After too much pressure, the independent media finaly got access to the rector's office. The movement plans to keep the occupation until the demands are discussed. A huge group of supporters (almost a hundred people) is concentrated on the rectory's ground floor making cultural and political activities during the whole night. Everyone is asked to participate in these support activities.

In January of this year, several corruption denounces turned up, envolving the actual administration of UNB's rectory, on funds embezzlement through the FINATEC Foundation to the rector's private use. The Public Ministry opened an investigation and found out others irregularities in the UNB Foundation and FUNSAUDE. The rectory's actual gestion group has been envolved in others scandals. It is worth to remind that since 1996, after a Fernando Henrique Cardoso's (Brazil's former president) decree, UNB doesn't have parity elections

"I wanna see who will evict me"

It's been a long time ago
This land was just mud
With too much entusiasm and courage
The Real Parque was born
The Edite and the Panorama
Time went by
The city grew up
The neighborhood valued
Then the rich comes with little money
Wanting to evict who came first

He gave me three thousand to leave
"Ha, ha, ha" kills me laughing
I`ve got rights and I`ll stay
I wanna see who will evict me

There's wall in here, there's wall in there
Everything is fenced and I cannot even walk
There's too much cameras
Watch tower on every side
I`m sick to look suspicious

They deceived me, they didn't keep their word
Of a place in Espraiada Avenue
Because the money the law guaranteed to me
It has been used in Estaida`s bridge

The apartment the rich will buy
It`s too expensive, but it's ugly as hell
This bridge of three hundred thousand bucks
Means a lot of homes to brazilian folks

Our solidarity to the people and the government of equador - Uribe IS NOT colombia

The Government of Uribe has humilliated the equatorian people by invading its territory and stealing corpses in its territory. Now it submits the equatorian government to lies and fake police set-ups. What Uribe's government's doing is a crime, not for its perseverence in fighting the rebels (guerrilla) or for the fact itself in facing and killing its war enemies, which at first made us believe that it was a combat begun on colombian territory, nor the despair due to revellations made by kidnapped and ex-senator Luis Eladio Perez, which made clear the failure in "democratic security" in Caquetá, Meta, Guaviare and Vaupés - Colombia, not only did the Colombian Government commit astounding violations to international rights and to its brother's territory, with the arrogance of an south-american-Israel, but also has taken advantage of a humanitarian agreement negociation to attack the negociator and simulate military power, and by that aborting all agreement to free through an exchange of arrested rebels all the kidnapped, the policemen and the soldiers trapped. And besides that, Uribe also wants to bathe himself in fake glory, for on colombian soil the conflict carries on despite of Reyes' death.

It is absurd to state that Raul Reyes was in Equador - near the borders - running away or hiding, for it is known that his location was in Putumayo - Equador months ago to meet the delegates from France and Piedad Cordoba. In fact, after some meetings with the french, he was bombed in 2005 on Colombian soil, and a month later authorities accused France from "intervention" in Colombia. In august 2007, the camp site where Reyes had just met with Piedad Cordoba was bombed; Reyes almost died, and, had he died then, an stop to the process which freed Clara Rojas, Consuelo González, Jorge Eduardo Gachem, Gloria Polanco, Luis Eladio Perez and Orland Beltran would occur.

Those in favor of Uribe now want to declare a triumph and abort the humanitarian agreement, on another country's sovereignty expenses, perhaps smaller but with greater dignity, telling Uribe to stop with the lying, the deceiving and the lack of respect. Believing they were the new south-american Israel, planes and colombian troops not only have operated on open skies and equatorian land, but also have taken corpses which were on Equador without waiting for equatorian action, disdaining all common investigation and evidences. When Equador answered with serene and wise dignity, the Uribian movement, to justify itself, insulted the equatorian government with preposterous lies. President Correa stated that his country will do whatever it takes to face this never-ending outrage. Our complete solidarity to the people and the Government of Equador offended by the violation of its territory and our uncondicional wishes of peace.

POLITICAL PRISONER Jan 31
Cesare Battisti had his first audience in the Brazilian Supreme Court of Justice

The political prisoner Cesare Battisti had his first audience of his process of extradition in the Supreme Court of Justice (STF, in its acronym in Portuguese), this Friday, January 18th, in Brasilia. The STF is judging an extradition request made by the Italian government, which accuses Battisti of participation in four homicides in the 70's, in Italy ? crimes for which he is charged with a life-long imprisonment sentence. He was arrested in Rio de Janeiro on the March 18 th in one operation coordinated in collaboration with the French police.

Battisti is accused in Italy for four homicides that were allegedly committed by the organization he belonged, the Armed Proletarians for Communism, a self-defence group linked to the Italian autonomous movement. Battisti alleges no participation at all in those homicides, defending that the legal demand that condemned him was biased (based upon testimonies forced by torture and rewarded denounces), which was judged devoid of the necessary attention. He alleges that, according to articles of the Italian media, the French government exchanged the extradition of Italian political refugees for the Italian vote in the European Constitutional Treaty, Italia's participation in the acquisition process of Airbus and the authorization for the French train enterprise TGV to operate in the itinerary Lyon-Turin.

Battisti's defence alleges that his extradition has not a legal support, given that he was condemned to a life-long imprisonment sentence and his judgment in Italy was political. In december 2005 the STF refused the extradition of another former Italian autonomiest militant, Pietro Mancini, whose sentence, according to the STF's interpretation, had a political motivation.

UFPE students protest against REUNI's approval

Since October 26th, UFPE students have occupied the Dean's Office to request the abolishment of the Universities' Council (Consuni) decision, that has approved it's integration with REUNI (Federal Universities' restructuring and expansion plan). The Council, aside from voting and approving in a arbitrarily manner REUNI's implementation on the university, has also done it without giving the academic community any access to discussions about the Program, which brings a variety of modifications to Public University.

On Saturday 27th, the Dean came to the Dean's office to talk with its occupants. There occurred a vast and democratic debate. However, Amaro Lins behaved in an evasive manner, avoiding, when convenient, all questioning aroused by the students; he kept an defensive conduct and didn't attend to the most important cause of the movement: the revokation of REUNI.

According to the Dean, REUNI was approved for UFPE, but would supossed to be discussions with the academic community in order to deal with all matters regarding the program's implementation.
